The Central Unit Preclinical Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging operates a 7 Tesla BioSpec MRI/MRS system that specializes in preclinical applications. With the existing helium-cooled receiver unit, we are able to achieve resolutions of less than 50 µm in-vivo. For metabolic studies, we have hardware for phosphorus, C13 and deuterium spectroscopy, with which we can gain in-vivo insights into glycolysis (sugar breakdown) and oxidative phosphorylation (cellular respiration for energy production).
Our methodological research in the field of lipid metabolism enables us to offer researchers MRI methods that go beyond the state of the art, such as the in-vivo quantification of enzymatic exchange rates in energy metabolism, the visualization of the activation of brown adipose tissue (temperature mapping) or the high-resolution quantification of neutral lipids.
